- The melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) is a cyclicnneuropeptide isolated initially from salmon pituitary gland andnlater from rat hypothalamus (summarized by Nahon et al., 1992n[PubMed 1572663]). In mammals, MCH perikarya are confined largelynto the lateral hypothalamus and zona incerta area with extensivenneuronal projections throughout the brain, including thenneurohypophysis. The anatomic distribution suggests anneurotransmitter or neuromodulator role for MCH in a broad array ofnneuronal functions directed toward the regulation of goal-directednbehavior, such as food intake, and general arousal. MCH and 2 othernputative neuropeptides, NEI and NGE, are encoded by the samenprecursor and appear colocalized in nerve cells and in manyninstances within the projections. The precursor is designatednpro-melanin-concentrating hormone (PMCH).
