- This gene encodes a member of the DEAD box protein family.nDEAD box proteins, characterized by the conserved motifnAsp-Glu-Ala-Asp (DEAD), are putative RNA helicases. They arenimplicated in a number of cellular processes involving alterationnof RNA secondary structure such as translation initiation, nuclearnand mitochondrial splicing, and ribosome and spliceosome assembly.nBased on their distribution patterns, some members of this familynare believed to be involved in embryogenesis, spermatogenesis, andncellular growth and division. The protein encoded by this genenshows ATPase activity in the presence of polynucleotides andnassociates with nucleoplasmic 65S preribosomal particles. This genenmay be involved in ribosome synthesis, most likely during assemblynof the large 60S ribosomal subunit.
