- This gene is a member of the leukocyte immunoglobulin-likenreceptor (LIR) family, which is found in a gene cluster atnchromosomal region 19q13.4. The encoded protein belongs to thensubfamily B class of LIR receptors which contain two or fournextracellular immunoglobulin domains, a transmembrane domain, andntwo to four cytoplasmic immunoreceptor tyrosine-based inhibitorynmotifs (ITIMs). The receptor is expressed on immune cells where itnbinds to MHC class I molecules on antigen-presenting cells andntransduces a negative signal that inhibits stimulation of an immunenresponse. It is thought to control inflammatory responses andncytotoxicity to help focus the immune response and limitnautoreactivity. Multiple transcript variants encoding differentnisoforms have been found for this gene.
