- Potassium channels represent the most complex class ofnvoltage-gated ino channels from both functional and structuralnstandpoints. Their diverse functions include regulatingnneurotransmitter release, heart rate, insulin secretion, neuronalnexcitability, epithelial electrolyte transport, smooth musclencontraction, and cell volume. Four sequence-related potassiumnchannel genes - shaker, shaw, shab, and shal - have been identifiednin Drosophila, and each has been shown to have human homolog(s).nThis gene encodes a member of the potassium channel, voltage-gated,nshaker-related subfamily. This member contains sixnmembrane-spanning domains with a shaker-type repeat in the fourthnsegment. It belongs to the delayed rectifier class, the function ofnwhich could restore the resting membrane potential of beta cellsnafter depolarization and thereby contribute to the regulation ofninsulin secretion. This gene is intronless, and the gene isnclustered with genes KCNA1 and KCNA6 on chromosome 12. [provided bynRefSeq].
