- This gene encodes one of the SERCA Ca(2+)-ATPases, whichnare intracellular pumps located in the sarcoplasmic or endoplasmicnreticula of muscle cells. This enzyme catalyzes the hydrolysis ofnATP coupled with the translocation of calcium from the cytosol intonthe sarcoplasmic reticulum lumen, and is involved in regulation ofnthe contraction/relaxation cycle. Mutations in this gene causenDarier-White disease, also known as keratosis follicularis, annautosomal dominant skin disorder characterized by loss of adhesionnbetween epidermal cells and abnormal keratinization. Alternativensplicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding differentnisoforms.
