- This gene encodes a member of thenbasic-helix-loop-helix-Per-Arnt-Sim (bHLH-PAS) superfamily ofntranscription factors. The encoded protein acts as a partner fornseveral sensor proteins of the bHLH-PAS family, formingnheterodimers with the sensor proteins that bind regulatory DNAnsequences in genes responsive to developmental and environmentalnstimuli. Under hypoxic conditions, the encoded protein complexesnwith hypoxia-inducible factor 1alpha in the nucleus and thisncomplex binds to hypoxia-responsive elements in enhancers andnpromoters of oxygen-responsive genes. A highly similar protein innmouse forms functional complexes with both aryl hydrocarbonnreceptors and Single-minded proteins, suggesting addition roles fornthe encoded protein in the metabolism of xenobiotic compounds andnthe regulation of neurogenesis, respectively.
