- Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded bynnuclear genes and help in protein synthesis within thenmitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of ansmall 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit. They have an estimatedn75% protein to rRNA composition compared to prokaryotic ribosomes,nwhere this ratio is reversed. Another difference between mammaliannmitoribosomes and prokaryotic ribosomes is that the latter containna 5S rRNA. Among different species, the proteins comprising thenmitoribosome differ greatly in sequence, and sometimes innbiochemical properties, which prevents easy recognition by sequencenhomology. This gene encodes a 28S subunit protein that belongs tonthe ribosomal protein S15P family. The encoded protein is more thanntwo times the size of its E. coli counterpart, with the 12S rRNAnbinding sites conserved. Between human and mouse, the encodednprotein is the least conserved among small subunit ribosomalnproteins. Pseudogenes corresponding to this gene are found onnchromosomes 15q and 19q.
