- Potassium channels represent the most complex class ofnvoltage-gated ion channels from both functional and structuralnstandpoints. Their diverse functions include regulatingnneurotransmitter release, heart rate, insulin secretion, neuronalnexcitability, epithelial electrolyte transport, smooth musclencontraction, and cell volume. Four sequence-related potassiumnchannel genes - shaker, shaw, shab, and shal - have been identifiednin Drosophila, and each has been shown to have human homolog(s).nThis gene encodes a member of the potassium channel, voltage-gated,nshaker-related subfamily. This member contains sixnmembrane-spanning domains with a shaker-type repeat in the fourthnsegment. It belongs to the delayed rectifier class, members ofnwhich allow nerve cells to efficiently repolarize following annaction potential. It plays an essential role in T-cellnproliferation and activation. This gene appears to be intronlessnand it is clustered together with KCNA2 and KCNA10 genes onnchromosome 1.
