- Histamine is a ubiquitous messenger molecule released fromnmast cells, enterochromaffin-like cells, and neurons. Its variousnactions are mediated by histamine receptors H1, H2, H3 and H4. Thisngene was thought to be intronless until recently. The proteinnencoded by this gene is an integral membrane protein and belongs tonthe G protein-coupled receptor superfamily. It mediates thencontraction of smooth muscles, the increase in capillarynpermeability due to contraction of terminal venules, the release ofncatecholamine from adrenal medulla, and neurotransmission in thencentral nervous system.
