- Ribosomes, the organelles that catalyze protein synthesis,nconsist of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit. Togethernthese subunits are composed of 4 RNA species and approximately 80nstructurally distinct proteins. This gene encodes a ribosomalnprotein that is a component of the 60S subunit. The protein belongsnto the L2P family of ribosomal proteins. It is located in thencytoplasm. In rat, the protein associates with the 5.8S rRNA, verynlikely participates in the binding of aminoacyl-tRNA, and is anconstituent of the elongation factor 2-binding site at thenribosomal subunit interface. Alternatively spliced transcriptnvariants encoding the same protein exist. As is typical for genesnencoding ribosomal proteins, there are multiple processednpseudogenes of this gene dispersed through the genome. [provided bynRefSeq].
