- This gene encodes a member of the peptidyl argininendeiminase family of enzymes, which catalyze the post-translationalndeimination of proteins by converting arginine residues intoncitrullines in the presence of calcium ions. The family membersnhave distinct substrate specificities and tissue-specificnexpression patterns. The type II enzyme is the most widelynexpressed family member. Known substrates for this enzyme includenmyelin basic protein in the central nervous system and vimentin innskeletal muscle and macrophages. This enzyme is thought to play anrole in the onset and progression of neurodegenerative humanndisorders, including Alzheimer disease and multiple sclerosis, andnit has also been implicated in glaucoma pathogenesis.
