- This gene encodes a UDP-glucuronosyltransferase, an enzymenof the glucuronidation pathway that transforms small lipophilicnmolecules, such as steroids, bilirubin, hormones, and drugs, intonwater-soluble, excretable metabolites. This gene is part of ancomplex locus that encodes several UDP-glucuronosyltransferases.nThe locus includes thirteen unique alternate first exons followednby four common exons. Four of the alternate first exons arenconsidered pseudogenes. Each of the remaining nine 5' exons may benspliced to the four common exons, resulting in nine proteins withndifferent N-termini and identical C-termini. Each first exonnencodes the substrate binding site, and is regulated by its ownnpromoter. The preferred substrate of this enzyme is bilirubin,nalthough it also has moderate activity with simple phenols,nflavones, and C18 steroids. Mutations in this gene result innCrigler-Najjar syndromes types I and II and in Gilbert syndrome.
