- The Shaker gene family of Drosophila encodes components ofnvoltage-gated potassium channels and is comprised of fournsubfamilies. Based on sequence similarity, this gene is similar tonone of these subfamilies, namely the Shaw subfamily. The proteinnencoded by this gene belongs to the delayed rectifier class ofnchannel proteins and is an integral membrane protein that mediatesnthe voltage-dependent potassium ion permeability of excitablenmembranes. Three transcript variants encoding three differentnisoforms have been found for this gene.
