- This gene encodes a highly conserved nonhistone protein,nwhich is a member of the heterochromatin protein family. Thenprotein is enriched in the heterochromatin and associated withncentromeres. The protein has a single N-terminal chromodomain whichncan bind to histone proteins via methylated lysine residues, and anC-terminal chromo shadow-domain (CSD) which is responsible for thenhomodimerization and interaction with a number ofnchromatin-associated nonhistone proteins. The encoded product isninvolved in the formation of functional kinetochore throughninteraction with essential kinetochore proteins. The gene has anpseudogene located on chromosome 3. Multiple alternatively splicednvariants, encoding the same protein, have been identified.
