- Histones play a critical role in transcriptionalnregulation, cell cycle progression, and developmental events.nHistone acetylation/deacetylation alters chromosome structure andnaffects transcription factor access to DNA. The protein encoded bynthis gene belongs to the histone deacetylase/acuc/apha family. Itnhas histone deacetylase activity and represses transcription whenntethered to a promoter. It may participate in the regulation ofntranscription through its binding with the zinc-fingerntranscription factor YY1. This protein can also down-regulate p53nfunction and thus modulate cell growth and apoptosis. This gene isnregarded as a potential tumor suppressor gene. [provided bynRefSeq].
