- The androgen receptor gene is more than 90 kb long andncodes for a protein that has 3 major functional domains: thenN-terminal domain, DNA-binding domain, and androgen-binding domain.nThe protein functions as a steroid-hormone activated transcriptionnfactor. Upon binding the hormone ligand, the receptor dissociatesnfrom accessory proteins, translocates into the nucleus, dimerizes,nand then stimulates transcription of androgen responsive genes.nThis gene contains 2 polymorphic trinucleotide repeat segments thatnencode polyglutamine and polyglycine tracts in the N-terminalntransactivation domain of its protein. Expansion of thenpolyglutamine tract causes spinal bulbar muscular atrophy (Kennedyndisease). Mutations in this gene are also associated with completenandrogen insensitivity (CAIS).
