AAA+ ATPase chaperone protein associated with a variety of cellular activities, particularly the ubiquitin proteasome system (UPS) and autophagy where it acts as a key regulatory at the intersection of these two protein degradation pathways. VCP / p97 facilitates the degradation of misfolded proteins through ERAD and the UPS, and is necessary for protein aggregate trafficking and aggresome formation.
