Potent, cell-permeable, IP3-independent intracellular calcium releaser, through sarco/endoplasmic reticulum Ca2+-ATPases inhibition. ER stress / Unfolded Protein Response inducer so sometimes reported as an autophagy activator (cf. Brefeldin A and tunicamycin). However conflicting data have also been reported suggesting both indirect inhibition of autophagy by thapsigargin through increase of intracytosolic Ca2+ levels and directly by blocking autolysosome formation. As such thapsigarin is currently regarded as an autophagy inhibitor.
