HMG-CoA reductase (HMGCR) is the rate-limiting enzyme for cholesterol biosynthesis. HMGCR is regulated via a negative feedback mechanism mediated by sterols and non-sterol metabolites derived from the product of the reductase reaction. Statin，a class of cholesterol-lowering drμgs inhibits HMGCR by lowering plasma cholesterol.
