Reversible inhibitor of serine and cysteine proteases such as calpain, trypsin, papain and cathepsin. Does not inhibit chymotrypsin and thrombin. Shown to inhibit activation-induced programmed cell death. Acts as an autophagy inhibitor through inhibition of lysosomal proteases, thereby interfering with the final destructive step in the autophagic process.
